Festival of Trees And Downtown Night Photography

Bethany and I spent the night wandering around downtown taking photos a few weeks back. It’s been a while since I’ve done something like this, so it was definitely a good time. We started out at the Empress Hotel. They have the Festival of Trees every year here. It’s a display of Christmas trees decorated by different businesses.

Which Christmas tree is your favourite?? Drop me a line in the comments!

After looking at all the trees, we wandered around… The city has decorated downtown with Christmas lights, so it was great checking out all the sites.

Setting up for long exposure night shots… I kind of wish I brought my tripod with me (decided to leave it in the car). But oh well, next time!

On top of a parkade.

Next stop, Chinatown.

Centennial Square. I’ll have to come back here because the ferris wheel is now running and there’s even more lights in the area now.

Inner Harbour. See if you can spot the swan in the next picture!

Last stop was the breakwater. I haven’t been here since they put up the railings… And it was really cold at the end. So we didn’t spend much time there.

It was definitely a great night! Will have to do more shooting again sometime soon!

Movie With A Side Of HDR

Another week goes by. My friend Mollie and I went to see Tron: Legacy at the IMAX on Friday. Here’s a trailer for those who haven’t seen it.

But this was my first time watching this movie (yes, I know, I don’t keep up with movies). Besides the really bad storyline, everything else was awesome! The visuals were amazing and the music was great at certain parts (music was written by Daft Punk AND they made a cameo appearance). It was also really cool because the movie was also shot in Vancouver! … I’d probably watch it again…

Afterwards, I decided to do some night time shooting because I haven’t done much of it lately. I also feel like ever since I started this blog, I need to take more pictures to go with these updates. It’s good because it’s some motivation for me to shoot more. So I’m hoping to keep this up. I didn’t take that many pictures that night. Instead I decided to experiment more with HDR (High Dynamic Range) pictures. Pretty much you take a few pictures (usually around 3 – 5 ish?) one at -2, -1, 0, +1, and +2 EV. Or you can just do it with -2, 0, and +2 EV. It’s really up to you. After taking those pictures, you combine them all to make a crazy looking picture that shows the huge range of dark and light sections of a picture. Hopefully I’ll be doing more of these in the near future because they’re a lot of fun! So only one came out alright, so I’ll leave you with this picture (Click on the image for a larger view).

My New Baby

Wow… Wasn’t expecting to do another blog update so quickly. So here it goes!

In my previous post, I was debating on which lens to get, and I think I’ve figured it out after that rant. So the more I thought about it, the more I just wanted to get it. And since today is pay day, I thought that this was my opportunity to buy it and I wasn’t able to wait a few more weeks. So ladies and gentlemen, my brand new Canon 50mm F1.4 lens. I also bought a UV filter to protect the lens. SO STOKED!!!

It was near the end of the work day when I decided to slip out for a few minutes to acquire this beautiful lens. I got to the store and after a few test shots on my camera, I just fell in love with it. My first prime lens! This is definitely going to change my way of shooting which is pretty exciting. As I was walking back to the office, I thought “what better place to test it out than in Fan Tan Alley!!” I know it’s a little clich√© and all because A LOT of people have taken pictures there, but I must admit… It’s a great place to test out a lens! Click on the pictures for the larger resolution.

Hopefully I’ll have some time tomorrow or in the next couple of days to really test this baby out :)
