Kinsol Trestle

The Kinsol Trestle has been on my radar for quite some time. It was built in 1920. Located near Shawnigan Lake, BC. And apparently the website says it’s the highest and largest surviving timber trestle in Canada and reportedly one of the four largest wooden structures in the world.

Not too long ago (maybe a few years?) the trestle got fixed up so it’s now 100% safe and people can walk over this incredible structure. Sooo Rhiannon and I decided to check out the place (we’ve both never been here before) and picked up a couple of geocaches on the way too. It was a great day!

Geocaching at East Sooke Park

Wow it’s almost 2 months since my last post. I guess things got a bit hectic with work (finishing up my contract), looking for work, and dealing with other things in life. That’s just the way it is sometimes.

Well, the weather has been amazing this week, and I’m hoping it’ll stay like this forever! Matty and I took advantage of this by going out to East Sooke Park to do some geocaching. Recently there has been a geocaching event which resulted in A LOT of new caches at this park. Soooo we decided to tackle some. We found a total of 19 caches and we explored an area of the park which I’ve never been before so that’s always exciting!! Found some cool things along the way too!

Oh, and have I mentioned how beautiful the west coast is?

Behind The Scenes – Bass Line TV Comedy Pilot – Jam Session

Another night of shooting. This time we were at the jam space in the Rock Bay area. It was my first time here… I didn’t even know there were places like this in the area! It was another great night. Everything went smoothly and we finished relatively early. I think I’m starting to like hearing the words “it’s a wrap”. Anyways, here’s some pics!

Directions… This is the second project I got to be a part of. Once again, I got the role of behind the scenes photographer. We shot at the CDI college, and it went really smoothly so we were out of there at a reasonable time. It’s been great getting all this exposure to film sets. Excited to see where this is all going to take me in the future! It’s also been great meeting so many people too. Once again, great crew!

My First Time On A TV Set

I got a message from a friend last week asking if I wanted to take some behind the scenes stills for a TV comedy pilot. I’ve never done anything like that before, so obviously I said yes!

The show is called Bass Line (click the link to check out the Facebook page). It’s about a bass player looking for his big break. So he goes and finds bands to join through ads, etc. We never know where he’s going to end up next.

Saturday was the first day of filming. We had a special guest actor, Tal Bachman. That guy is hilarious on set. Never a dull moment with him. It was loads of fun. We got to the venue at around 3:30pm. We weren’t able to get the place cleared until 10:00pm. So we started setting up. I ended up getting shuffled around that day/night. The day started with me filming some behind the scenes footage for Shaw and being an assistant while riding shotgun in a limo. We got back to the venue and was asked to be in the film – just chilling around outside of the venue… Awesome!.

10:00pm came and we set up shop inside the venue. Helped out with more behind the scenes filming and stills. It was a great night! Amazing crew and cast. Everyone was just amazing! A few of us bailed out around 4:00am (which was really 5:00am because of daylight saving time.. Ugh). But it was soooo worth it! Great experience, and lots of fun! Here’s a couple of teasers. Super excited for the next shoot!

Just Another Sunset in Victoria

It’s been over a month since my last post… I’m back at H&R Block setting up offices. These past couple weeks have been super hectic – working 10+ hours every day. I was pretty exhausted, but I’m glad all the offices are up and running now.

Last Friday was my first “slower” day so I decided to finish work early and go take some pictures because it’s been a long time. I was trying to figure where I could shoot a sunset. After a few minutes, the Gorge Rd Trestle came up to mind. It’s right by my place, so I got home, ditched all my stuff, grabbed my camera gear and headed out the door.

I’m still testing out this post-editing stuff… But the more I do it, the more I realize how much it enhances a picture. I really like seeing my progress as a photographer and how much it’s changed. It’s great! I’ve even included a HDR picture in there just for fun.

A Review of 2012

Another year gone! It seems like when you get older, the quicker time goes by… I can’t believe it’s 2013!

After looking through some pictures from 2012, I’d say it’s been another good year (minus not finding a full time job… But that will come this year… Right?). Let’s start the review of 2012!!

January:

My first time snowshoeing on Saddle Trail.

March:

Finished my 52 week HDR project! It’s my first time doing such a project that really forced me to go out and take pictures every week.

Met a rad dancing group from Calgary called Legacy One.

First time hiking up Sugarloaf. Nashira and I did a rock climbing recon mission out there. Looks like there’s quite a bit of awesome routes there, but it’s a pretty long hike in.

Went to Seattle’s Pike Place Market and checked out the wall of gum. It was disgusting yet awesome at the same time. And it was also my FIRST blog post that was freshly pressed.

FINALLY saw John K Samson live!

April:

Coombs and mini golf is a must in the Summer.

July:

Canada Day in Victoria. I love it here! Roads are closed off, people are wandering all over downtown, live music, fireworks…

And this is probably the highlight of the year – Shannon and I hopped on a plane and went to the UK to go see Pete! Here we are at the Vancouver airport about to leave. STOKED! It’s our first time in Europe!

Flew out to Dublin to briefly see my friend, Scott. We checked out a handful of places such as the Guinness Brewery, Kilmainham Gaol, Trinity College, Temple Bar, and St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Yeah we did!!

Oxford, UK. Where we attended a Geocaching mega event, and checked out the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and the Pitt Rivers Museum.

Went to a little town called Chepstow to eat some food and to check out a castle.

Cheltenhem is where we met up with one of Pete’s friend and watched the latest Batman movie!

And then next was London!! This was during the Olympics, so it was really cool to check it out. Went on the Eye of London, the Elizabeth Tower, Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Abbey Road, Sherlock Holmes Museum, River Thames, Shakespeare’s Globe, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tower of London, and Tower Bridge. LOTS of walking, but sooo worth it.

We also went to Newent… A little town where a crazy geocache was. Pretty much you had to use a kayak of some sort and paddle down this really dark canal for who knows how long… And the cache was somewhere down there. It was amazing!

Cooper’s Hill… The place where they roll a wheel of cheese down a hill and people run after it… The videos and pictures don’t do the hill any justice. It’s very steep and lumpy…

August:

The tail end of the trip. We finally checked out the Gloucester Cathedral. We did all the guided tours as well which was really cool. The crypt tour and the bell tower tour.

Last stop of the trip was Cardiff. We checked out Cardiff Castle, and then we went to Millennium Stadium to watch a quarterfinal women’s Olympic football match! We definitely don’t have stadiums this big in Victoria.

Alright… Back in Canada now. Next on the list is Chad’s big proposal day. Helped him set up and take pics. His plan was to take Rotha out for dinner, and then take the dog out for a walk (that’s where the surprise was going to be). The path to the park was lit with candles, and then that’s where they were greeted by a bunch of family and friends. We watched a slideshow of pics they’ve taken, and then bam! Ring!

Christmas in Victoria!

So there we have it… 2012! Another year down. There was a a pretty big gap during the Fall months. Mostly because I was out of money, so I had to hermit for a while. Wasn’t able to do anything overly exciting. Laaaammmeee… But I’m really looking forward to what 2013 has in store for me.

Christmas 2012 in Victoria

Finally getting into the Christmas spirit! My friend and I decided to go for a walk downtown to check out a few Christmasy things that happen in Victoria. It was a beautiful day in Victoria. It wasn’t very cold for a December day. So off we went! I love all the different lights around the place. Victoria definitely puts some effort into it.

First stop was to find free parking…. Soooo we ended up parking at Ogden Point and decided to take a stroll out on the breakwater. The sky was doing awesome things, and there was a pelican around the area which is rare around Victoria.

Next stop, gingerbread houses at the Laurel Point Inn. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this. We got there, and I was blown away! Wasn’t expecting the gingerbread houses to look that amazing! The people must have put so much time in making them. It was awesome! And it smelled amazing there!

The next one was one of my favs.

So much detail!

After the gingerbread houses, we walked over to the Empress Hotel to check out the Festival of Trees that they have every year. Pretty much a company goes in on a tree and they decorate a tree together.

Yes, that’s a really big gingerbread castle!

Autumn Through A 50mm

I love Fall (not as much as summer though)! I love all the different colours from the leaves, the sunny days, and the crisp air.

I know I haven’t been updating as often as I like… Hopefully I’ll be able to get out there more and snap a bunch more pics in the near future. But anyways, lately when I’ve been dropping my friend off at his place, I see a bunch of pumpkins lined up around a park sign down the street from where he lives. So today I decided to go and take pics of these pumpkins and drive around Victoria to capture some of the Fall colours. I’ve realized I haven’t been using my 50mm 1.4 lens all that much, so today was the day to use it! I definitely need to use this more often because it’s such a sweet lens!

Every time I take pictures, I sort through them and just throw them up on Flickr. This time I decided to give this whole “post-editing” thing a try. There’s slight differences from the original vs the edited versions of the pictures. But I was pretty happy with them. If you have any editing tips, give me a shout! Or… Feel free to just comment on the pics.
